After the two successive hits in ‘Ivar Vivaahitharaayal’ and ‘Happy Husbands’, Saji Surendran is now the most sought after young director in Mollywood . After taking a few months rest from his last film, the director’s new flick ‘Four Friends’ released at screens. Featuring Jayaram, Jayasurya, Indrajith, Kunchakko boban and Meera Jasmine in the title roles, the movie is said to offer a very different story than the regulars.
Jayaram gets to play Roy, the desi version of Jack Nicholson’s Edward Cole, a multimillionaire who takes a man (Morgan Freeman) whom he befriended at a cancer care center on a world trip. Krishna Poojappura has substituted Morgan with three characters, Soorya (Kunchacko Boban), Amir (Jayasurya) and Gouri (Meera Jasmine). Each of them is dying from the dreaded disease (blood, liver, bone, stomach cancer) and they all come for treatment to a plush hospital, Pratheeksha, run by Dr Nandakumar (Ganesh).
Director Saji Surendran and his script writer Krishnan Poojapura are known for their sentimental serials. If your concept of films matches that of never-ending serials, then the storyline may be okay – at least in parts. For others, this could turn out to be a tiring saga that is mostly boring and clichéd to the core. There is the much publicised scene with Kamal Hassan, who gives a pep talk on how he lost some of his close friends to cancer, and gives the four friends some confidence. The legendary actor performs well, but Recipes for Athletes the whole sequence makes the legendary acting uneffective.
The positives of the film can count in fingers as Two.The first one is the very effectively used cameo performance in the film by Kamal Hassan. It is revitol cellulite solution undoubtedly the best part of the film, not on account of Kamal’s teddy bear hamster star power or charisma, but because it presents him as a very down to earth individual who talks to us as to how the mind dictates to the disease. The dialogues that are quite realistic, draws examples from real life, and the results are real good.
The second reason is Jayasurya. This if you don’t ride you don’t know is an actor who has been experimenting not merely with looks in one film after the other, but also shows a great dedication to the roles that he gets to play. Of the four friends, there is only one character that you would identify with, and that is Amir. And without doubt, this is courtesy a rollicking performance by Jayasurya who turns out to be a mark-point at his carrier.
The screenplay by Krishnna Poojappura is more like one of those emotional serials on TV channels, rather than a commercial film. Four Friends has been clearly inspired by the emotional Hollywood tearjerker ‘The Bucket List’. But Computer Forensics Information cant get into the near-way of ‘The Bucket List’. And some comedy scenes and unwanted fight scene makes the film more unbearable to viewers. Saji Surendran has gone for a highly conventional narration and it is rather surprising to see even the classic song from Sholay, “Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge..” being picturised in the simple format. The electric spice grinder and bean bag lap desk visuals by Anil Nair and music by M Jayachandran just passing one and didnt make any effective to the flick.
Overall viewers getting out after watching it,with a disappointing mind. Even Kamal Hassan’s cameo or joining of good actor didnt satisfies audience. Better go and buy “The Bucket List” Dvd and watch!!
